As much as bookbinding is an integral part of who I am, painting began calling out to me when I was working intense hours conserving rare books. Being outside with color in hand and a feeling for the landscape driving me, I enter a new world of seeing and being. Responding to the wild world is very different from responding to the needs of old books, and they compliment each other well.

Costa Rica: In 2003 our family moved to Monteverde, Costa Rica for two years. My husband taught at the Monteverde Friends School where our sons went to school. I worked on a low residency masters in poetry at Warren Wilson College. I painted regularly with Helena Guindon in the cloud forest of Monteverde.
New Hampshire: The blueberry fields near our house turn colors you would never expect in the fall and spring. I began painting them in the early 1990’s, and have continued to paint around the town and Mt. Washington Valley. Almost all of them were painted outside in one or more sittings, using gouache, an opaque watercolor.
Maine Coast: For a decade my friend Jay and I have paddled on the Maine islands in the summer. The last few years we have hunkered down on one island rather than traveling from island to island. This suits our aching bones and gives us more time to paint. These were painted in the Deer Isle and Muscungous area.
